Hanuman Jayanti falls on the full moon of the lunar month of Chaitra, usually a few days before or after the Assamese new year. It is a modest observance in Assam, kept in Hanuman temples in Guwahati and the towns with recitation of the Hanuman Chalisa and the Sundara Kanda, offerings of laddoos and bananas, and community meals.

The story

Hanuman is honoured as the perfect servant of Rama, strong, learned and without pride. In the Assamese Ramayana of Madhava Kandali his leap to Lanka is one of the best-loved passages.

The day often coincides with the opening of Rongali Bihu, when the whole state is on holiday.
