Ganesh Chaturthi is the fourth day of the waxing Moon in Bhadrapada. In Assam it is kept by households and, increasingly, by clubs and markets in Guwahati and the towns, with clay images installed for a few days and then immersed in the Brahmaputra. The Ganesh temple at Ganeshguri, which gave its name to one of the city's busiest crossings, draws a queue all day.
The story
Ganesha is invoked at the start of every undertaking. Rock-cut images of him, a thousand years old, look out over the Brahmaputra from the cliffs at Guwahati.
The festival falls three days before Vishwakarma Puja, when Assam's workshops, garages and tea factories worship the divine craftsman.
